In itself, it was probably good, but I did not feel that the film is really the continuation of the TV series. I was not entirely satisfied with Serenity (2005). Serenity is an interesting futuristic action / adventure, I think fans of the genre might enjoy it. The actors are great, fit their roles perfectly, as if they were practicing them for years. The characters are okay, we get to know them enough to care about them. The action scenes are interesting, varied, and easy to follow. There are no proper character arcs for the main characters. The consistency is a little strange, I'm not entirely satisfied with it. The story is good, there are a couple of twists.

The Serenity movie is about a team of space criminals trying to uncover a government conspiracy. I like the creators enough that I've bought the DVD in a format that I cannot play to support them. I have to admit that I'm positively biased towards the movie. I've seen every episode of the TV series. I've probably seen the trailer before watching the film.

Imagine a film where Bruce Willis discovers he’s a ghost, and then spends the second half of the picture wandering around, doing ghosty things, quite aware of his condition. What’s worse, there’s still about 45 minutes of movie to go. But when Baker (and by extension the audience) figures out what’s really going on, it’s such a wonky contrivance it lets all the air out of the story. And if you watched only the first hour of Serenity and were then called away, you’d remember a great neo-noir with a weird, unsolved enigma at its heart. Oh, and a bespectacled, be-satchelled, lawyerly-looking fellow (Jeremy Strong), who looks to have wandered in from a Coen brothers movie, and keeps trying (and failing) to have a word with Baker. There are also some teasing mysteries at the periphery, not least the fact that Baker and Patrick seem to have some kind of extra-sensory bond. Up to this point, Knight has crafted a fantastic, nail-bitingly good thriller with solid characters, exquisite cinematography and creative sound design – I swear, the LIGHT from the lighthouse makes a swishing sound as it sweeps over the island. She’s Patrick’s mom, now married to Frank (Jason Clarke), a real piece of work who’s been abusing her for years. He lives in a converted shipping container that looks like it might have washed ashore with him inside.Īnd then Anne Hathaway drops into the tale, perfectly poised and seemingly lit by an invisible light. Writer/director Steven Knight ( Locke) paints Baker in broad strokes, giving him a predilection for smoking, a fondness for rum, and a vague, tragic backstory about an estranged son, Patrick.
